About Discover Science & Engineering
Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) is Ireland’s national science promotion programme that aims to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among students, parents, teachers and members of the public.

DSE’s objectives are to increase the numbers of students studying the physical sciences, promote a positive attitude to careers in STEM and to foster a greater understanding of science and its value to Irish society with country-wide events such as Science Week www.ScienceWeek.ie.

DSE aims to provide good web resources for young people with an interest in a career in science with its website www.MyScienceCareer.ie where there are profiles on historical Irish scientists, in-depth looks at different STEM career types and a list of Irish Science Ambassadors making strides in Irish science today. A useful source of science career-related videos can also be found at www.youtube.com/DSEvideo.

With websites such as www.Science.ie we aim to provide you with the latest in science news and events in Ireland. You can even follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ScienceWeek where we run regular competitions to win some cool prizes. More competitions can be found at our Bebo profile www.Bebo.com/I_Love_Science.

DSE works in partnership with a wide range of organisations to deliver initiatives that promote STEM, for example, with Engineers Ireland and their STEPS to Engineering initiative and is a key partner of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.   DSE is also responsible for a number of schools programmes such as Discover Primary Science www.PrimaryScience.ie and www.Greenwave.ie as well as second level supports such as www.ProjectBlogger.ie and www.DiscoverSensors.ie

About Steps to engineering
STEPS to engineering was established in 2000 to encourage primary and post primary students to explore the world of science and engineering. The value of the programme has been formally recognised by Government and is a key element of the National "Discover Science & Engineering" programme. It is managed by Engineers Ireland and is supported by the Department of Education & Science, Forfás, FÁS and a number of major engineering employers.

The name 'STEPS to engineering', adopted in 2005, is aimed at increasing awareness of the role of the programme by helping people to identify its activities with engineering. Enhancement of the programme is part of Engineers Ireland's "Promoting the Profession" initiative.

Our partners help bring the vision of our organisation to life and impact many students as they pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math careers and the subject matter expertise they will require to be successful and competitive in whatever career they choose, to make Ireland more competitive in the world. Working together we promote student involvement in:
Literacy – enhancing their ability to comprehend complex subjects, not just reading skills
Community Engagement – Strengthen the ties between the business community and the next generation of skilled workers
Economic Development – Promoting the region as a hotbed of STEM activity
Environmental Issues – Showcasing green schools and how environmental technologies are applied STEM concepts
